Butrint

Butrint is a historic city whose roots reach back to ancient Greece and later the Roman Empire. It sits in the Vlorë region within Epirus, and today is one of Albania’s most important archaeological sites, around 14km south of Sarandë and close to the Greek border. It stands on a hill overlooking the Vivari Channel, and forms part of Butrint National Park.

Butrint has been inhabited since antiquity, first settled by Greek tribes before becoming a Roman settlement and later a bishopric. It went through a period of prosperity before gradually declining in late antiquity, and was eventually abandoned in the medieval period after a major earthquake.

Today, visitors can explore the ruins of the ancient city, including Roman temples, a theatre, and historic houses, making it a major destination for history and archaeology enthusiasts. As part of Butrint National Park — one of Albania’s most important protected natural areas — the site also offers scenic surroundings for exploring the outdoors.
