Pocitelj

Počitelj is a fortified medieval village on the left bank of the Neretva River, about 30 km south of Mostar on the main M17 highway.

Počitelj’s fortified core was built in 1383 on the order of King Stjepan Tvrtko I of Bosnia, later expanded during the Ottoman era. The village is made up of traditional stone houses, a distinctive conical watchtower crowning the hill, a mosque, and old marketplaces — giving it the feel of an open-air museum thanks to its considerable architectural and urban-historical value.

Počitelj is today a registered National Monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina and sits on UNESCO’s Tentative World Heritage List, recognized as a historic crossroads of multiple civilizations and cultures across the centuries.
