Neum

Neum is the only town along Bosnia and Herzegovina’s entire coastline, making it the country’s sole access point to the Adriatic Sea. Bosnia’s coast runs just 20 km, and Neum sits about 50 km south of Mostar, 47 km northwest of Dubrovnik in Croatia, and 122 km southwest of Sarajevo.

This short coastal strip has a striking geopolitical story: it geographically separates Croatia’s southern Dubrovnik exclave from the rest of Croatian territory — an arrangement dating back to the 1699 Treaty of Karlowitz, which drew the borders this way more than three centuries ago, and which still stands today.

Neum began developing as a tourist destination in the second half of the 20th century, as its first resorts and hotels appeared along the shore. The town today has both pebble and sandy beaches, public and private, with clear waters that draw visitors for swimming and snorkeling, making it a popular coastal stop on Bosnia and Herzegovina tour itineraries.
