Mount Trebevic

Mount Trebević overlooks Sarajevo directly from the southeast, and is one of the city’s closest and most easily reached natural destinations, accessible via the cable car departing from the Bistrik neighborhood.

The first cable car to Trebević’s summit was installed in 1959, well before Sarajevo hosted the Winter Olympics, but it played an important role in 1984, carrying thousands of spectators up to watch the Olympic events. The cable car was destroyed during the Bosnian War and reopened 26 years after it stopped running — today it carries visitors from Bistrik to the summit in about a seven-minute ride.

At the summit sits the Olympic bobsled track, built for the 1984 Winter Olympics, which hosted bobsled and luge events on a 1,300-meter concrete run cutting through the forested mountainside. Less than a decade later, this same track became a defensive position during the Siege of Sarajevo, as Bosnian forces used its curved turns as fortified positions — large sections still bear bullet holes and other war scars today. Now almost entirely covered in graffiti, the abandoned track has become one of Sarajevo’s most distinctive dark-tourism sites, combining world sporting history and recent wartime memory in a single place.
