The Amphitheatre of Durres

The Amphitheatre of Durres is the largest Roman amphitheatre built anywhere in the Balkans, located in the city of Durres on Albania’s Adriatic coast (not in Saranda).

History

The amphitheatre was built in the early 2nd century AD, under Emperor Trajan. Its oval design measures roughly 136×113 metres, and it could hold between 15,000 and 20,000 spectators, fitted with underground tunnels and an advanced drainage system reflecting the skill of Roman engineering.

From Gladiators to a Church

At its peak, the amphitheatre hosted gladiator duels, encounters with wild animals, and public events. It was damaged by earthquakes in the 6th and 10th centuries AD, and an early Christian church was built on its site during the second half of the 4th century AD.

Today

The amphitheatre is today one of the most-visited archaeological sites in Albania, and is on UNESCO’s tentative list of World Heritage sites.
