Berat Castle
بيرات · Albania
Berat Castle is a major historic landmark in the city of Berat, Albania, and one of the city’s top tourist attractions. The current structure largely dates to the 13th century, when it was significantly rebuilt and expanded, though the site itself has been fortified since antiquity.
The castle is a strong example of medieval defensive architecture, built on a hilltop and enclosed by sturdy walls with towers built for defence. Its strategic position overlooking the city and surrounding area made it an important stronghold historically.
Beyond its defensive structure, the castle contains a number of historic buildings — visitors can explore its preserved courtyards, squares, and historic halls. It’s also home to a small museum displaying artefacts and historic exhibits from the region.
From the top of the castle, visitors get sweeping panoramic views over the city and surrounding landscape, including green plains, distant mountains, and the Osum River, which runs through Berat — making it a popular spot for photography and scenic views.
