Lake Plav

Lake Plav (Plavsko Jezero) is the largest and most scenic lake in the Plav region of northeastern Montenegro, sitting between the Prokletije (Accursed Mountains) and Visitor mountain ranges at an elevation of 906 metres.

The lake covers around 1.99 square kilometres, stretching roughly 2,160 metres north-south with an average width of about 920 metres and a maximum depth of 9 metres. It’s a glacial lake, formed around 10,000 years ago at the end of the last ice age.

The Luča river flows into the lake, while the Lim river flows out of it. The small town of Plav sits on its shore, and the wider area is a popular destination for hiking and mountain biking at the foot of the towering Prokletije range.

Activities

In summer, Lake Plav offers swimming, kayaking, rowing, and fishing; its surface freezes over in winter.
