What to Pack for Albania, Kosovo & Montenegro

A trip combining Albania, Kosovo, and Montenegro often means moving between coast, mountains, and cities in just a few days — worth planning for when you pack.

Essentials for Any Trip

  • Comfortable, sturdy walking shoes — you’ll need them whether you’re exploring old-town markets or hiking a mountain trail.
  • Layered clothing — the temperature difference between the coast and the mountain highlands can be significant even on the same day.
  • A light scarf or shawl — to cover shoulders or your head when visiting mosques, churches, or monasteries.
  • A power adapter if needed — Albania, Kosovo, and Montenegro all use European Type C and Type F plugs at 220-230V.
  • Cash in two different currencies if your trip combines Albania (Lek) with Kosovo or Montenegro (euro).

By Activity

If your trip includes mountain trails (Theth, Valbona, Durmitor): real hiking boots (not ordinary sneakers), a waterproof and windproof jacket, a light hat and gloves if traveling in early spring or fall, and a refillable water bottle.

If your trip includes the coast (Sarandë, Vlorë, Budva, Kotor): swimwear, sunglasses and sunscreen, and light water shoes for rocky beaches (more common in this region than sandy ones).

If your trip focuses on cities and historic sites (Tirana, Pristina, Podgorica): comfortable everyday clothing, keeping modest dress in mind for any religious site on the itinerary.

By Season

  • Summer (June-August): light clothing, a hat, and sunscreen, but bring one light extra layer if your trip includes the mountain highlands in the evening.
  • Spring and fall (April-May, September-October): adjustable layers — warm days and cooler evenings, especially inland.
  • Winter (November-March): a real winter coat if you’re heading to the highlands, where temperatures can drop well below freezing with heavy snow.

This is a general guideline — adjust it to your actual itinerary and trip length.
