Cold War Tunnel, Gjirokastër
جيروكاسترا · Albania
The Cold War Tunnel — also known as the “Tunnel of Death” — is a distinctive historic site in Gjirokastër, Albania, dating from the country’s communist era in the 20th century.
Built during Albania’s communist rule, the tunnel served defence, surveillance, and covert-communication purposes, connecting Gjirokastër Castle to the Cathedral of the Dormition of the Virgin in the town centre. At around 200 metres long, it’s made up of narrow passages, ramps, and small rooms once used as storage and offices.
Despite its ominous name, the tunnel has been restored and opened to the public, letting visitors explore a distinctive piece of the region’s military history and get a sense of the conditions of that era.
