Pristina Bear Sanctuary

For many years, keeping brown bears was not legally banned in Kosovo. These brown bears were kept in small cages at restaurants as a draw for customers. In November 2010, when private bear-keeping became illegal, the organisation FOUR PAWS stepped in immediately, working with government support to find suitable homes for these “restaurant bears”. Nineteen bears now live at the Pristina Bear Sanctuary, enjoying ample space to roam, proper feeding, and sustainable care. The environmental education centre “Thesaret e Natyrës” runs as a project inside the Pristina Bear Sanctuary, aiming to raise community awareness — especially among young people — about animal welfare and environmental protection.

Wildlife Conservation at the Pristina Bear Sanctuary

The Pristina Bear Sanctuary in Kosovo is a fine example of efforts to conserve and care for wildlife. Here’s a summary of the key information about this sanctuary:

Founding and development:

  • The Pristina Bear Sanctuary was established following the intervention of FOUR PAWS in November 2010.
  • Nineteen brown bears were moved from the restaurants that had kept them to the sanctuary, providing a natural environment and ample space to roam and receive proper care.

Goals and initiatives:

  • The “Thesaret e Natyrës” environmental education centre inside the sanctuary aims to raise awareness among young people and the wider community about the importance of animal welfare and environmental protection.
  • The sanctuary serves as a place for education and awareness about the importance of protecting and conserving wildlife.

Achievements and impact:

  • The Pristina Bear Sanctuary has succeeded in providing a healthy, safe natural environment for the rescued brown bears.
  • Through its education and awareness initiatives, the sanctuary contributes to raising awareness about the importance of protecting wildlife and the environment among young people and the community.

Sustainability and the future:

  • Providing sustainable care and a suitable natural environment for the bears is part of wider efforts to preserve biodiversity and wildlife in the region.
  • The Pristina Bear Sanctuary is expected to continue supporting the bears’ welfare and raising awareness about the importance of protecting wildlife and the environment in future.

In short, the Pristina Bear Sanctuary is a successful example of efforts to resettle and care for threatened wildlife, and to raise awareness of the importance of protecting them and the environment more broadly.
