Albania combines historic towns, mountains and coastline. Choose a region or route suited to your trip length, and allow dedicated days for long transfers instead of combining every destination into a short visit.
Places to consider for your route
Saranda and the south
Saranda offers waterfront walks and a visit to the Lekursi Castle area. The Blue Eye spring is an excursion outside town requiring a separate transfer; check access and visiting requirements before departure.
Berat
Explore the castle area and historic quarters on both sides of the Osum River. The town is known for its architectural heritage; plan a comfortable walk suited to its slopes and lanes.
Shkoder
A base for exploring Rozafa Castle, the lake and historic centre. Mountain excursions need separate time and checks of weather, roads and fitness.
Durres
The city combines a waterfront with a Roman amphitheatre. The amphitheatre dates from the Roman period, and its modern discovery began in 1966.
Butrint
An archaeological site within a national park in southern Albania, suited to a cultural and nature visit from the Saranda or Ksamil area. Choose available paths according to weather and ticketing hours.
Tirana
Combine Skanderbeg Square, Et’hem Bey Mosque and the Grand Park. Before visiting the National History Museum, check indoor access and renovation arrangements; choose another museum if needed.
The coast and Riviera
Options include Borsh, Potami and Lukova, with Ksamil farther south. Beaches vary between sand and pebbles; check swimming conditions and services for your chosen dates.
Choosing a season
The right timing depends on the activity and region. Beach trips have different needs from mountain walks or city visits; check weather and activity operation before confirming the plan.
