Bar

Bar is Montenegro’s largest port city, located on the country’s southern coast, roughly equidistant between Budva and the Albanian border. It’s the terminus of the well-known Belgrade-Bar railway, and has a ferry line connecting it to the Italian cities of Ancona and Bari.

The Bar municipality’s coastline stretches 46 km, from hidden coves to long sandy beaches. Šušanj beach sits just a few minutes from the city center, while quieter, more scenic beaches can be found in the neighboring villages of Sutomore and Čanj.

Bar’s most important historic landmark is Stari Bar (Old Bar), a medieval town abandoned in 1878 following Montenegrin bombardment during the wars of liberation from Ottoman rule. Stari Bar was once Montenegro’s most important urban settlement, passing over the centuries through Venetian, Serbian, Hungarian, and Ottoman hands — leaving a visible mix of architectural and cultural influences to this day. The old town sits on a hill near the sea, guarded by the towering Mount Rumija, about 4 km from the center of modern Bar — reachable by taxi, local bus, or on foot (roughly a 45-minute uphill walk).
