Cetinje

Cetinje is Montenegro’s historic royal capital, located about 40 km from Podgorica (30-45 minutes by car). Although Podgorica has been the country’s official capital since 1946, Cetinje still holds the title of “honorary capital,” remains the official residence of Montenegro’s president, and is widely regarded as the country’s cultural and spiritual heart.

Cetinje Monastery, the seat of the Metropolitanate of Montenegro, is one of the city’s most important landmarks. It was founded in the late 15th century, destroyed during the Morean War, and later rebuilt. The monastery houses a museum considered the most important religious museum in Montenegro, preserving centuries-old icons, golden vestments, royal gifts, manuscripts, and letters.

Another notable landmark is Biljarda, a former royal residence built in 1838 that is now part of the National Museum of Montenegro. Most of the city’s major museums, the monastery, embassy buildings, and restaurants are within a 15-minute walk of each other, making Cetinje an easy destination to explore entirely on foot.
